No good without the hood. Use the Hood.

Buying that lens hood is good idea. First - it stops inwanted light fleshes comming to your lenses, second - good physical protection for your lenses as well!

I found having a hood was a great help on a recent visit to Niagara falls where the spray and reflected light had a habit of adversely affecting my other lenses my 50mm and hood was much easier to keep dry.
