JVC MP-XV841 Mini Note PC (Iss. 21 2004)

JVC, best known for its home-entertainment products, enters the U.S. ultraportable space with the JVC MP-XV841 Mini Note PC.

Smallest of the group. Good battery life. Crisp display.

Typing difficult. Performance is below average. Battery sticks out the back of the system.

All things considered, the JVC MP-XV841 Mini Note is a fun little ultraportable. In the niche of entertainment-oriented ultraportables, where DVD watching is key, the Mini Note is the one to watch.

JVC MP-XV841

The JVC MP-XV841 is small even for an ultraportable laptop. In fact, some of its features--namely, the keyboard and the screen--are so small that they seem more appropriate for a child's toy than for a mobile professional's laptop. Still, this machine...

Long battery life; decent performance; internal CD-RW/DVD combo drive; complete software bundle; good support.

Expensive; extremely small keyboard; tiny 8.9-inch screen; small navigation buttons.

The ultraportable JVC MP-XV841's novelty will wear off after an hour's use: it's just too small for serious computing.

JVC MP-XV841

Ultraportable notebooks are small enough to fit inside briefcases, but they rarely offer integrated optical drives, instead sticking you with the hassle of packing a USB-connected peripheral. The 3.2-pound JVC Mobile Mini Note MP-XV841US, however, has...

The Mini Note comes with an ultra-low-voltage 1-GHz/600-MHz Pentium M processor for ultraportables. Considering that this CPU is slower than a standard notebook chip, the Mini Note performed well in our tests, earning a WorldBench 5 score of 52. That's...

JVC Mobile Mini Note MP-XV841US

Well-equipped ultraportable boasts an integrated combo drive.

If mastering small keyboards is a challenge you can embrace, the Mini Note has a lot to offer. It provides basic connections, a small but bright readable screen, and an integrated combination drive. These features would make it a threat to the IBM...

JVC MP-XV841 Mini Note PC

JVC is looking to shake things up with its first U.S. computer system. This ultraportable is already on a par with the best of them.

All things considered, we prefer the JVC MP-XV841 Mini Note to the Sony—especially considering the JVC entry is comparably equipped and costs hundreds of dollars less. It still doesn't supplant the IBM ThinkPad X40 as our favorite ultraportable (the...

JVC MP-XV841 Mobile Mini note PC

After slogging down the high street, laden with presents for the angry masses, it's nice to know that JVC are thinking of ever more impressive ways to lighten the load, in your laptop bag.

Has everything you could ask for

Cost, Keyboard size

Overall the Mini Note is awe-inspiring. The combination of the media, the connectivity and the software should temp any buyer, regardless of scale. Add to this that it is all wrapped into a device weighing only 3.4lbs and that takes compact computing...

PC Plus review: JVC MiniNote MP-XV841

The typing experience really is too weak and, for all its strengths, the MiniNote ultimately comes across as a laptop compromised in the name of entertainment. As such, you'll need to be a particular fan of film viewing to make the hefty price tag worthwh

Review: JVC MiniNote MP-XV841GB

Don Bradbury takes a look at the latest in JVC's series of MiniNote notebooks

Size, functionality, XP Pro

A little pricy

In service, we found the MiniNote P-XV841GB rather easy to use. Sure, you need good eyesight if you're to rely on the integral display, especially at the default font point sizes. And our touch-typist did complain a little about keystrokes not...
