At first glance the CloudBook is an impressive design with some innovative features and some reasonably impressive specs for the $400 price tag. However, upon closer examination it's clear that VIA and Everex had to make a number of sacrifices to bring...

At present, we'd recommend the Everex CloudBook only to experienced Linux users who will view the inevitable hours they spend hacking their laptop as recreation, not hassle.

As both an editor for a laptop review web site and as an average consumer I am in love with the low-priced UMPC-type subnotebook market. Laptops like the Everex CloudBook, the Asus Eee PC, and soon-to-be released subnotebooks from other manufacturers...

Extremely portable. Good battery life. WiFi+Wired LAN. Pre-installed with almost everything needed. Simple-enough setup (if you can see all the buttons). Recognizes all peripherals installed via USB (thumb drives, mice, HDDs, etc...). Built-in SD slot....

800x480 resolution is too small for some dialogs (as mentioned) including the time-zone dialog that is displayed at initial boot-up. Linux+Gnome has a heck of a learning curve for the un-initiated

Very small, and relatively cheap. Very light. 30 gigs of storage is a nice step up from the competition at a similar price point. Windows drivers available. 3+ hour run time

gOS was not optimized at all for 800x480 (other than setting the default resolution). Dialogue boxes don't fit on the screen, can't read the google toolbar agreement, 50% of firefox display is consumed by toolbars. Gives Linux and Everex a bad name....

gOS is terrible ; keyboard can be cramped - don't expect to touch type very fast/long on it ; Keyboard flexes somewhat ; Only 2 USB port ; DVI instead of VGA port (my work projectors are VGA)

Compact, nice design, easy to stash in a backpack along with books
