Sony's BRAVIA KDL-46HX800 is impressive. It has better black levels than last year's plasma TVs, and even its default settings deliver a great level of detail without being excessively sharp. It is expensive though, and if you want to view 3D content...

Cool remote with power button on back ; Surround sound has a lot of depth

Colors are a little off and require tweaking ; Menus take up the entire screen

Sony's HX800 series' picture quality and surround sound are good enough to justify its current price.

The Hitachi Ultra Vision LE42S704 delivers decent picture quality and great audio at a good price if you're not set on Internet or robust multimedia support.

3D-ready. Very good 3D and 2D picture quality. Attractive cabinet. Plenty of Web apps.

Expensive. 3D glasses and transmitter cost extra. Some minor backlight blooming. Glasses are heavy and can become a bit uncomfortable when worn for long periods.

Even so, Sony has demonstrated that there's still life in LCD and has produced yet another barnstorming television. This is a very deserving Editors' Choice winner.
