Superb color quality in outdoor settings; novice-friendly shooting mode; includes wide-angle lens adapter; compact, attractive design.

Bottom-loading tape compartment; poor low-light performance; no microphone input, accessory shoe, or battery charger; low-quality still photos and minimovies; no backlight-exposure mode.

The compact Canon ZR400 camcorder performs beautifully in the great outdoors, but Canon continues to drop the ball when it comes to low-light shooting.

The compact Canon ZR400 camcorder performs beautifully in the great outdoors, but Canon continues to drop the ball when it comes to low-light shooting.

Superb color quality; choice of automated and manual shooting modes; low price; solid battery life; supports add-on lenses and filters.

Few manual controls; bottom-loading tape compartment; no accessory shoe; poor low-light performance; captures low-resolution stills.

Canon's affordable, compact ZR200 performs beautifully when the lights are bright, but you're probably better off with its less expensive sibling, the ZR100.

Canon ZR85

 

The ZR85 is inexpensive, comfortable to hold, and has a powerful zoom lens, but its video comes up short.

Cheap. 20X optical zoom. Slim design with great ergonomics. Decent stills for a sub-$500 camcorder.

Video could be sharper. Bottom-loading design inconvenient with tripod. No flash for stills or lights for low-light shooting. Has manual focus but no manual focus ring. No external mic port.
